The Department of Production Management (DPM), as a basic teaching and research unit of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, was established in 1994. The units on which the Department was initially based were the former Chair of Metal Technology and, in part, the Chair of Engineering Graphics. After 1999, the Department of Metallurgy was also incorporated into it.

The Department carries out the main part of its teaching and research activities through the following sections:
1. Mechanical Technology Section
2. Economic Engineering and Industrial Management Section
3. Materials Engineering Section
The Department’s teaching activities primarily involve teaching, supervised assignments, seminars, and practical laboratory work, which complement the teaching process at the Mechanical Engineering Faculty and other faculties of the Polytechnic University of Tirana.
The Department conducts its teaching and research activities in several closely interconnected key areas, including:
1. Manufacturing processes, integration, computerization, and robotics
2. Materials Technology
3. Quality and Production Management
4. Business Economics, Organization, and Management
5. Economic Engineering

The teaching and research activities of the Department’s academic staff are organized according to the curricula covered by the Department and the academic staff’s respective areas of specialization.
The Department oversees the following degree programmes:
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Production and Industrial Management
Bachelor’s and Master of Science Degrees in Materials Engineering
Bachelor’s and Master of Science Degrees in Economic Engineering
The Department of Production and Management also contributes to the doctoral school at the Mechanical Engineering Faculty (MEF) by providing academic and research support for the supervision of research topics. It engages experienced academic staff in fields such as production systems management, process optimization, digital transformation, industrial sustainability, and materials engineering.
Through its laboratories and research infrastructure, international collaborations, and partnerships with industry, the Department creates opportunities for advanced research and publications in high-impact journals, preparing young researchers who are capable of contributing to scientific and societal development.
